Long before political correctness entered the lexicon, the Smiths were tackling topics that nearly ended their syndicate run. The strip became a platform for sharp commentary on gun control, military spending, and cultural hypocrisy. Smith pioneered a "Dirty Is Beautiful" philosophy, expressing a visceral worry that children were losing their "dreaming innocence" to the corporate "rat race."
